UF dean warns of more layoffs, Gainesville Sun

Just as faculty are fighting layoffs from 2008, a University of Florida dean has warned there will "almost certainly" be more layoffs if expected budget cuts occur.

College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean Paul D'Anieri sent a letter to college faculty last week girding them for more layoffs.

"There will almost certainly be layoffs, and if the cut is more than a few percent, there will be layoffs of tenure-track and possibly tenured faculty," he wrote.

Report: Reversing the Course of Academic Staffing, FACE

Today, AFT releases a new report, Reversing Course: The Troubled State of Academic Staffing and a Path Forward, which provides further data on higher education's continuing reliance on underpaid contingent faculty and the parallel decline in the number of full-time tenure-track faculty. The report looks not only at the numbers of contingent faculty now in the workforce, but also at the number of classes and students they are teaching as well as what they earn. This analysis is followed by a new interactive model to help colleges, unions and other faculty organizations, or even states begin to calculate the cost of reversing this trend.

FAU faculty fighting for more, Palm Beach Post

Florida Atlantic University’s faculty sent out a press release dated Friday detailing their fight for bigger raises at the Boca Raton school.

The release says the faculty union made a request for a 10 percent raise - the same awarded FAU President Frank Brogan. What the university was offering before was the same as what staff is slated to receive, a 1 percent raise and one-time $1,000 bonus.

UF President responds to faculty union, TV20 WCJB

University of Florida President Bernie Machen responded to the claim that the school's budget cuts violate the Faculty Union's collective bargaining agreement at the Community Campus Council breakfast Wednesday morning. His message: It's too late to complain.In a room full of community leaders and deans from various colleges on campus, Machen explained why the proposed $47 million budget cuts and the elimination of 430 jobs on campus are necessary. "The only thing that's a little disappointing is everyone had the chance to have input," said Machen," and some groups elected to sit aside and not have input. If you don't have input when you're given a chance to, you have a poor position to come in at the end and criticize what has been done."
