The University of Central Florida and Florida Virtual School are partnering on a new program allowing college students to intern with the Florida Virtual School.

In the 2007-2008 school year, the virtual school served more than 63,000 students in grades six through 12 through the Internet, according to a UCF release.

BB&T funds UCF business ethics program,Orlando Business Journal

BB&T Corp. announced the donation of $1 million to the University of Central Florida College of Business Administration to create the BB&T program for business ethics.

The college is expected to receive $100,000 a year for the next 10 years to fund the program, according to a release.

Florida has taken pride in offering a college education at a bargain-basement price, but students are starting to get what their parents are paying for.

Consider this statistic:

If Florida's 11 public universities raised their lowest-in-the-nation tuition 1 percent statewide, it would bring in all of $4 million. This year and last year, the Legislature cut $200 million from the universities' budgets. So the colleges would have to raise tuition 50 percent just to make up what they lost.

UCF only Florida public university giving stsudents a break on new premium on tuition, Orlando Sentinel

Looks like University of Central Florida students are getting the best deal when it comes to the introduction of a premium on undergraduate tuition at five Florida public universities this fall. UCF students will be paying a 3 percent premium on base tuition compared to the 9 percent premiums on tap at the University of Florida, Florida State University and the University of South Florida. The only other school that currently qualifies to charge the premium, Florida International University in Miami, set its premium at 9 percent on Monday. That's on top of a 6 percent general tuition increase. So the actual overall tuition hike at UCF is 9 percent, and 15 percent at the others. UCF students are getting a break because student government and the administration worked out a deal to start the premium at a moderate rate instead of the maximum 9 percent so students have time to adjust. None of the rates should come as too big a surprise, since the concept of a premium on tuition has been kicking around for years.

Tax cuts bankrupt college educaiton, Central Florida Future (UCF)

Reaching 50,000 could hurt with tight UCF budget, Orlando Sentinel

The University of Central Florida's enrollment will reach 50,000 this fall, but that's hardly cause to celebrate.

State-mandated budget cuts of $11.4 million will force that larger student body into crowded classrooms. There will be fewer courses and fewer instructors.

Bigger isn't always better -- particularly if the money isn't there to support it.

UCF is already looking to turn away as many as 300 transfer students from schools outside Central Florida. UCF ought to reconsider its policy of automatically accepting transfers from Valencia, Seminole, Brevard and Lake-Sumter community colleges.

The measures, announced by UCF Provost Terry Hickey Wednesday, were prompted by a $6 million shortfall in state funds and a move to create a $5.4 million reserve fund to deal with future state cuts.

First wave of UCF medical school applicants: 778, Orlando Sentinel

Competition could be fierce to become a member of the inaugural class of 40 students at the University of Central Florida’s fledgling medical school if the first wave of applications is any indication. So far, 778 students have lined up to compete for the open slots, according to information UCF obtained from the American Medical College Application Service, the nonprofit, centralized application processing service for U.S. medical schools. It’s too soon to tell how many students are being lured by the promise of a free medical education worth $160,000 – a gift no other new U.S. medical school has ever offered its first class. Initial applications will continue to come in through Dec. 1, so the actual depth of the applicant pool will not be known until after that. Applicants include students from every large Florida university, school officials said. Among the other schools applicants attended: Harvard, Duke, Yale, Cornell, Johns Hopkins, Ohio State and Brigham Young.
